Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy characterized by drug-resistant epilepsy with multiple seizure types starting in childhood, a typical slow spike-wave pattern on electroencephalogram, and cognitive dysfunction. Treating LGS poses several challenges:

High Costs: Healthcare resource utilization and direct costs associated with LGS are substantial. Mean annual direct costs per person vary significantly across studies, and home-based care and inpatient care contribute significantly to these costs¹.

Adverse Impact on Quality of Life: LGS adversely affects the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients and caregivers. Seizure events are associated with higher costs and worse HRQoL¹.
In summary, LGS presents a significant burden of illness, and more research is needed to evaluate indirect costs and caregiver burden¹. Despite the challenges, ongoing efforts aim to improve the management and outcomes for individuals living with LGS.
